How ERV and HRV Systems Work
Energy recovery ventilators and heat recovery ventilators (ERV and HRV) are similar devices that use the air inside a building to pre–heat fresh air brought into the ventilation system. The ERV/HRV draws two currents through it: fresh air brought in through an outdoor vent, and stale air from indoors. The two currents move through the unit and by a process of counter flow heat exchange heat moves from one to the other. This pre–cools or pre–heats the fresh air, which then enters the building, while the stale and pollutant–filled air is exhausted outdoors.
The process works for both winter and summer weather. In winter, the outgoing indoor air loses heat to the incoming fresh air. The process switches in summer. This allows the unit to "recover" the energy used to originally heat and cool the air inside the building and apply it to the fresh air.
